Vegetation Productivity Losses Linked to Mediterranean Hot and Dry Events

چکیده
Persistent hot and dry conditions play an important role in vegetation dynamics, being generally associated with reduced activity. In the Mediterranean region, ecosystems are adapted to such conditions. However, prolonged intense heat drought or occurrence of compound events may still have a negative impact on This work aims study how productivity is affected by events, examining set severe episodes that occurred three different regions (Iberian Peninsula, Eastern Western Europe) between 2001 2019. The analysis relies remote sensing products, namely Gross Primary Production from MODIS detect monitor vegetative stress LST SM ESA CCI evaluate influence temperature soil water availability stressed vegetation. Of all 2005 episode Iberian Peninsula was most significant, affecting large sectors low tree cover areas crops leading reductions annual plant ~47 TgC/year. obtained results highlight land-atmosphere coupling clarified warm springs activity moisture amplify summer temperatures. functional recovery after these varied across ranging months years. highlights basin usefulness remote-sensing products assess response land covers episodes.

Vegetation Productivity in Natural vs. Cultivated Systems along Water Availability Gradients in the Dry Subtropics
The dry subtropics are subject to a rapid expansion of crops and pastures over vast areas of natural woodlands and savannas. In this paper, we explored the effect of this transformation on vegetation productivity (magnitude, and seasonal and long-term variability) along aridity gradients which span from semiarid to subhumid conditions, considering exclusively those areas with summer rains (>66%...
متن کاملProductivity losses from injury in China.
OBJECTIVE To examine the productivity losses and costs of injury and disease in China using an improved approach. METHODS Potentially productive years of life lost (PPYLL) were calculated for injury and four major disease groups (respiratory, cardiovascular, infectious, neoplastic). DATA SOURCES The mortality data are from the 1999 National Health Statistics Report and the morbidity data fr...
متن کاملThe decreasing range between dry- and wet- season precipitation over land and its effect on vegetation primary productivity
One consequence of climate change is the alteration of global water fluxes, both in amount and seasonality. As a result, the seasonal difference between dry- (p < 100 mm/month) and wet-season (p > 100 mm/month) precipitation (p) has increased over land during recent decades (1980-2005). However, our analysis expanding to a 60-year period (1950-2009) showed the opposite trend. This is, dry-seaso...
متن کاملAsthma-related productivity losses in Alberta, Canada
OBJECTIVES To estimate the number and cost of asthma-related productivity loss days due to absenteeism and presenteeism (at work but not fully functioning) in Alberta in 2005. METHODS Using data from the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study focused on people of working age (18-64 years), who reported having an asthma diagnosis. Total asthma-related disability days, including in-b...
متن کاملBehavioural responses, traumatic injuries and live weight losses in ostrich (Struthio camelus) chicks transported by road during hot-dry conditions
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of six-hour road transportation on behavioural activities, live weight and traumatic injuries of 40 (20 males and 20 females) ostrich chicks age 3.5 months. The average weight of the birds was 27.7 kg. Four separate journeys were conducted and each vehicle was loaded with 10 ostriches. The behavioural events, environmental data, live weights and ...
